SportsDirect.com Discuss the English Teams in The Champions League
NOTTINGHAM, England, September 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
The second round of games in the 2014/15 Champions League group stage kicks off today and tomorrow, but the English teams need to improve their performances if they want to progress through their respective groups in December.
Arsenal were last undone (with a 2-0 loss) by a rampant Borussia Dortmund team, who are clear favourites to win Group D. If the Gunners can win convincingly against Galatasary at home next week, their competition will be back on track. Wenger's men need to stay calm at the back and allow their passing to flow with confidence. Achieving this should see them progress through their group.
Chelsea would have been disappointed to draw 1-1 at home against Schalke last time out, but they will believe that a win against Sporting Lisbon is achievable. Mourinho's men are favourites for the Premier League and will be pushing to win Europe's top club competition. Striker Diego Costa will be considered a big threat to the Portuguese side who may find the Spanish international too hot to handle.
Manchester City will still be hurting from the defeat to Bayern Munich in their last Champions League fixture. City battled bravely to earn what seemed like a point, but they were undone by a late Boateng strike. Roma are City's next opponents and the Manchester club will be confident in securing a comfortable home win and progressing through their group with little drama.
Liverpool left it late to beat Bulgarian side Ludogorets at home, but they managed to achieve what the other English teams couldn't do in week 1 - win. The Anfield club travel to Basel next with their confidence shaken after some poor results in the Premier League. If Liverpool can win away in the Champions League this week, it may just reignite their season.
