Sport Your Favorite Sunglasses And Post A #SunglassSelfie To Shine A Light On National Sunglasses Day June 27!
ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Vision Council will be hosting National Sunglasses Day this Monday, June 27th – a day that annually reminds people that wearing sunglasses is not only fashionably fun, but also a health necessity to protect the eyes from long- and short-term damage from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. This year, the non-profit organization wants everyone to join the conversation by sharing a photo of themselves in sunglasses on their favorite social media sites, tagging #SunglassSelfie and #NationalSunglassesDay!
In its 2016 UV report, titled Spare Your Sight: Using Shades for Protection and Style, The Vision Council reported results surveyed from more than 10,000 adults in the United States. While 75% of Americans are concerned about UV eye exposure, only 31% wear sunglasses every time they go outside. Those in their 20s are the most negligent, with 55% reporting they "never, rarely or only sometimes wear sunglasses." Additionally, more than one-third of adults have experienced symptoms from unprotected UV exposure, yet many are unaware of the risks or unsure about how to protect themselves.
Through National Sunglasses Day, The Vision Council is on a mission to make a positive impact by encouraging people to wear sunglasses every time they are outdoors. Here's what everyone should keep in mind when buying and wearing sunglasses: not all sunglasses offer proper protection (looking for a label, sticker or tag indicating UVA/UVB protection is key); darker lenses don't mean better protection (UV protection has nothing to do with lens darkness or color); and sunglasses should be worn at all times outdoors despite the weather and season (UV rays are at play at all times).
Besides offering UV protection, sunglasses are must-have fashion accessories that can easily elevate any outfit. The Vision Council encourages the public to show off their personal styles and try out some of the season's hottest trends on National Sunglasses Day. When it comes to color, anything goes this summer – from bold brights, to soft pastels, to tried-and-true neutrals, to translucent hues, the entire spectrum runs the gamut. Meanwhile, cat-eye styles, small and oversized round frames, as well as classic and revamped aviators – which are a go-to for almost all face shapes – stand out from the crowd when it comes to frame silhouettes. An array of eye-catching details tops things off – think mirrored, tinted and colored lenses; color blocking and ombré effects; unexpected materials like wood and fabric; fun prints and patterns; and matte and glossy finishes. Combined, these elements make the sunglasses for summertime anything but boring!
"With the latest lens technology and the availability of lighter, sturdier and more stylish frames, it's easy to keep your eyes safe and comfortable – and to look great – all at the same time," says Justin Bazan, OD, who serves as medical adviser to The Vision Council. "Just as we spend a few minutes applying sunscreen before going outside, we hope everyone takes a moment to slip on their favorite shades and post a #SunglassSelfie on National Sunglasses Day."
