Splice Machine Launches Public Beta of its Hadoop RDBMS
Company uses proven Hadoop® scale-out technology to cost-effectively replace traditional RDBMS databases
SAN FRANCISCO, May 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Splice Machine, provider of the only Hadoop RDBMS, today announced that its real-time relational database management system is now available as a public beta. The Splice Machine database enables companies to replace traditional RDBMS systems that are too costly or difficult to scale. A full-featured, transactional SQL database on Hadoop, Splice Machine moves Hadoop beyond its batch analytics heritage to power operational applications and real-time analytics.
Splice Machine already has 15 charter customers across a variety of industries, including digital marketing, telecom, and high-tech, that are looking to take advantage of its scale-out SQL technology. Harte Hanks, a marketing service organization and partner to top brands, has seen a greater than 10x price/performance improvement with the Splice Machine RDBMS compared to their existing Oracle RAC databases.
"We wanted to use Hadoop to enable mass scalability, but no vendor until now offered full ANSI SQL and the transactional support that we needed to power existing applications like Unica® and Cognos®," said Rob Fuller, Managing Director of Product Innovation, Harte Hanks. "As a Hadoop RDBMS, Splice Machine delivers all of the functionality and performance we need. We are delighted with our initial results, which show queries executing several times faster with greater flexibility and efficiency."
Splice Machine provides customers with a next-generation database platform that combines the scale-out technology of Hadoop, the distributed real-time computing power of HBase, and the full features of an RDBMS, including ANSI SQL and ACID transactions. Unlike traditional databases that can be costly and inefficient at Big Data scale, Splice Machine's scale-out database enables customers to power applications and operational analytics that support real-time, interactive queries on data updated in real-time.
"We're excited to have Splice Machine move to public beta, so that more companies can replace legacy RDBMS systems that are too expensive or hitting the wall," said Monte Zweben, CEO and co-founder, Splice Machine. "We're also enabling a whole new generation of data-intensive applications that can scale out on commodity hardware cost effectively.
Said John Leach, CTO and co-founder of Splice Machine, "Splice Machine marries two proven technology stacks to create its Hadoop RDBMS: Apache Derby™ and Apache HBase™/Hadoop. We replaced the storage engine in Apache Derby with HBase and redesigned the planner, optimizer, and executor to leverage the distributed HBase computation engine. This enables Splice Machine to achieve massive parallelization by pushing the computation down to each distributed HBase server."
"For developers and database architects looking for better ways to build applications, Splice Machine's approach offers a unique combination of benefits," said Robin Bloor, Chief Analyst and Co-Founder, The Bloor Group. "By combining transactional integrity and ANSI SQL support with the horizontal scale-out of Hadoop, Splice Machine is disrupting the traditional RDBMS market, and helping to make Big Data a reality for real-time applications."
