Special Activities Planned to Highlight Work of State Veterans' Homes
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 12, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's six veterans' homes, operated by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, have planned special activities throughout next week celebrate the 24th annual State Veterans' Homes Week, June 14-20. Admissions staff at each home will also be available to answer questions and give tours.
"State Veterans' Homes are places for veterans to reside when the time comes that they need personal care, skilled nursing care or dementia care," said Brig. Gen. Jerry Beck Jr., the state's deputy adjutant general for veterans' affairs. "State Veterans' Homes Week is an excellent time for community members to visit the homes, explore various volunteer opportunities and meet some of America's honored veterans."
Special activities throughout the week will include musical entertainment, games and tournaments, field trips to local attractions, Flag Day ceremonies, carnivals and picnics.
"Our staff is carefully trained, fully licensed and dedicated to treating residents with the dignity and respect they deserve. No applicant is denied admission to a state veterans' home because of lack of income or assets," said Beck. "We encourage veterans or their families to contact us to find out how we can help them meet their long-term care needs."
The six homes serve more than 1,500 eligible veterans and their spouses. They include the Delaware Valley Veterans' Home in Philadelphia, the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center in Scranton, the Hollidaysburg Veterans' Home in Hollidaysburg, the Pennsylvania Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Erie, the Southeastern Veterans' Center in Spring City, and the Southwestern Veterans' Center in Pittsburgh.
