Sparta Systems Becomes First Quality Management Solutions Provider to Achieve EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Compliance
HAMILTON, N.J., Oct. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Sparta Systems, Inc., an industry pioneer and a global leader in enterprise quality management software (EQMS) solutions, announced its certification under the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield data protection program. The company—a former Safe Harbor participant—is the first quality management solutions provider to adopt this new framework.
Designed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and European Commission, the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield guarantees that companies on both sides of the Atlantic comply with EU data protection requirements when transferring personal data between the European Union and the United States. The previous U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Framework is no longer legally recognized as adequate under EU law.
Through the certification, Sparta's privacy protections are presumed effective and EU Member State requirements for prior approval of transatlantic data transfers are, therefore, waived or approval will be automatically granted. This also allows the company to minimize data transfer costs for its customers.
"For more than two decades, Sparta has helped thousands of organizations to safely and efficiently bring their products to market by providing innovative quality management software and cloud solutions, as well as upholding global data privacy and security regulations," said Tom Sullivan, Vice President of Product Management, Sparta Systems. "With an extensive customer base in highly-regulated industries, such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage and medical devices, the company remains committed to protecting all aspects of our customers' businesses and their end users."
To join the Privacy Shield Framework, a U.S.-based organization must self-certify to the Department of Commerce and publicly commit to comply with the framework's requirements by developing the company's own Privacy Shield-compliant privacy policy.
Although joining the Privacy Shield Framework is voluntary, companies intending to conduct business directly or indirectly with EU citizens must adhere. Once an eligible organization makes the public commitment to comply with the framework's requirements, the commitment will become enforceable under U.S. law.
