SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Aug. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sovereign Health, a national behavioral health system, is proud to announce that Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, M.B.B.S., M.S.c., founder and Chief Executive Officer, discusses the state of addiction treatment, mental health and how the facility provides a broad spectrum of high-quality behavioral health treatment services for adults and adolescents on a broadcasted show on Public Broadcasting Service. The show aired as an American Health Journal special on the west coast on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at 5 p.m. PDT.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. is in the midst of an addiction crisis. "When I looked at the mental health and addiction scene, there were high-end treatment centers and county facilities, but nobody was looking to provide treatment for Middle America," says Dr. Sharma. "Sovereign Health is a group of physicians and psychologists that have been trained and have practiced in the behavioral health field. We're very interested in making sure that we are held to the standards of both assessment and treatment in this industry. We want people to have confidence when they come here for treatment."
"About 60 percent of people with addiction also suffer from a mental health disorder," continues Dr. Sharma. "It is important that the person who is treating you doesn't just have a counseling certification, but they have the ability to treat you for your depression or bipolar disorder. Patients who've been treated for both mental health and addiction receive better outcomes than those who are treated solely for addiction."
Dr. Sharma has been recognized with numerous awards, honors and grants for his work in advancing mental health. He is a prolific researcher and scientist as well as the author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and five books on schizophrenia and mental illness. Sovereign's founder has served on numerous editorial boards, acted as peer reviewer for 14 international medical journals and has been on various advisory boards governing the development of antipsychotics. He currently co-hosts "In Your Right Mind," a cutting-edge, weekly radio show that covers various topics in behavioral health.
PBS and their member stations are America's largest classroom, the nation's largest stage for the arts and a trusted window to the world. In addition, PBS's educational media helps prepare children for success in school and opens up the world to them in an age-appropriate way.
