According to CNN.com, two police officers were fatally shot and a third one injured while responding to a family disturbance call Saturday in Palm Springs, California. The two victims were identified as Jose Gilbert Vega, a 35-year veteran of the department, and Lesley Zerebny, the mother of a 4-month-old. A third officer was wounded and is being treated at a local hospital, Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said.

USAToday.com reported that Police Chief Reyes said at a recent press conference, "Today Palm Springs lost two brave officers. I am awake in a nightmare right now." As noted in the article, the slain officers were the first Palm Springs police officers to die in the line of duty since 1962.
