SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Jan. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sovereign Health, a national behavioral health system, is pleased to announce it has opened its doors to host a family support group on behalf of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Orange County at the treatment center's San Clemente facility. The NAMI meetings, which are confidential and take place in a safe environment, are comprised of families who have loved ones dealing with mental health challenges. The meetings are held at Sovereign Health at 1211 Puerta Del Sol, Training Room, San Clemente, CA 92673, on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.
"In the Fall of 2016, Sovereign Health began funding four NAMI signature education programs and a support group in south Orange County. Consistent with NAMI Orange County's long tradition, each of these programs is provided to every participant at no cost," says John S. Leyerle, President of NAMI Orange County. "The programs, some of which have begun and timing for others is being planned, include Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, In-Our-Own-Voice, Parents and Teachers as Allies and a support group."
During the NAMI Family Support Group sessions, family members support each other by utilizing their collective lived experiences and learned wisdom. Family members can achieve a renewed sense of hope for their loved ones living with mental health challenges.
Following a structured model, these NAMI Family Support Groups, led by family members of individuals living with mental illness, ensure that everyone has an opportunity to be heard and get what they need. The meetings are free and open to the community, and designed for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. The meetings give insight to challenges and successes of others facing similar circumstances, and offer no specific medical therapy or medication recommendation.
NAMI Family Support Groups will help attendees:
- See the individual first, not the illness
- Understand that mental illnesses are traumatic events
- Aim for better coping skills
- Find strength in sharing experiences
- Reject stigma and not tolerate discrimination
- Not judge anyone's pain
- Forgive themselves and reject guilt
- Embrace humor as healthy
- Accept that we cannot solve every problem
- Work for a better future in a realistic way
- Recognize that mental illnesses are medical illnesses that may have environmental triggers
