SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Nov. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sovereign Health, a leading national provider of behavioral health treatment services, announces a new television interview about the importance of resiliency and how to emotionally cope with issues in a positive way. The interview, featuring Monica Powers, Psy.D., Director of Clinical Development at Sovereign Health, was first broadcast live on the NBC affiliate KMIR's program "Desert Living" on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
Resilience is nurtured through the biological and psychological development of a person. "To be resilient shows how we can emotionally cope with things in a positive way; and how we are able to move forward in a happy and strengthening way," says Dr. Powers when asked about what it means to be resilient.
As Dr. Powers notes in the interview, a victim experiences feelings of helplessness where characteristics of a survivor include the ability to adapt to change. "I became more interested in resilience when I started working and interning with a woman who was a survivor from Hurricane Katrina. Notice the word "survivor" versus "victim." That's a key point in resilience. Her story was just so moving that it pushed me to want to know more about how people can be so resilient and how people can instill that in into their lives."
When asked how to be resilient and if resilience can be learned, Dr. Powers replied, "It's about perspective. You can take what your circumstances give you and bemoan them, or you can essentially make lemonade. And yes, I think it takes a change in perspective, but I do think resilience can be learned. This is a perfect topic right now, especially after the election. What some people were really counting on, and what the results ended up being, may not be what people were expecting. It's really about being emotionally aware of yourself, and you have to build a bridge and then get over it. You have to be in control of your own destiny in some degree."
Sovereign Health operates nine treatment facilities in five states: California, Arizona, Florida, Texas and Utah. The facilities are fully licensed and have been awarded Gold Seal accreditation by The Joint Commission, the highest level of accreditation available in the behavioral health field. Desert Living is a 30-minute TV program broadcast from Palm Springs in the desert's Coachella Valley.
