Sovereign Health CEO, Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, Discusses Mental Health in New Television Interview

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Oct. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sovereign Health, a leading national provider of behavioral health treatment services, announces a new television interview featuring Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Tonmoy Sharma. The interview, broadcast live on the NBC affiliate KMIR's program "Desert Living" on Wednesday, Oct. 12, features Dr. Sharma discussing mental health treatment, as well as the stigma surrounding mental health. Dr. Sharma also shared information about the new help line Sovereign Health established to support those dealing with the Palm Springs Police Department shooting that took place on Oct. 8.

As Dr. Sharma notes in the interview, for those trying to cope with the deadly shooting, Sovereign Health created a help line with counselors waiting by. "Dr. Mary Berst, Sovereign Health of Palm Desert's Associate Program Director, is managing the help lines. We're a national behavioral health treatment service center and we specialize in mental health treatment. We want to be available to anyone in need," says Dr. Sharma.

Dr. Sharma, who gave an impactful presentation on cognitive deficits in addiction and mental health to a sold-out crowd in Costa Mesa, California, in May, also addresses what mental health is. "Mental health can range from anxiety, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar and even post-traumatic syndrome disorder. There are several forms of mental health illnesses, but these are just naming a few of the more common cases Sovereign treats."

Bryan Gallo, the host of the "Desert Living" program, asked Dr. Sharma how he got started in the behavioral health field. "I was trained as a psychiatrist and researched the brain. I wanted to know what makes us happy, what makes us sad, and which part of the brain modulates happiness and sadness. Also, which functions of the brain are important? For example, attention and memory, and how people lose the ability to properly use their brains when mental health or addiction is involved. These were all researches that I worked on and I now have a research team at Sovereign continuing this work."

Dr. Sharma also spoke about the stigma against mental health illness. "One in four people suffer from mental health illness. When someone breaks their hand, they can see where the pain is coming from, but when someone is going through a mental health problem, they don't know what they're dealing with. A person with a broken mind doesn't seek help because he or she is afraid of the unknown; it's the fear of the unknown."
