ATLANTA, June 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Company announced today that Karl Moor has been appointed senior vice president and chief environmental counsel.

In his new position, effective July 1, Moor will be responsible for providing legal advice and policy guidance on environmental matters affecting the operation of the Southern Company system's fleet of generating plants.

Moor, who joined Southern Company in 1998, currently serves as vice president and associate general counsel. In this capacity, he provides counsel for litigation and public policy as well as legal expertise in compliance and other regulatory matters.
Prior to joining Southern Company, Moor was a partner with the law firm Balch & Bingham LLP in its utility, legislative and regulatory section. He also served six years in the U.S. government, holding various positions on the Senate Judiciary and Labor and Human Resources committees and in the Reagan administration. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
Moor has a range of experience in federal, regulatory and legislative matters that affect energy producers as well as extensive experience with the Federal Power Act and the Clean Air Act. He has served as chair of the Edison Electric Institute Task Force on Carbon Capture and Sequestration, and is a member of the American Bar Association, Energy Bar Association, Alabama State Bar Association and Birmingham Bar Association.
