"Families with a child facing a prolonged hospitalization should be able to focus on support and healing," explains Dr. Labron Chambers, pediatric anesthesiologist with SAC. "By offering families a 'home away from home,' the Ronald McDonald House allows this, and the donation of toys and supplies by SAC furthers their mission. There is an immense amount of satisfaction seeing that our donations are vital to the success of the Ronald McDonald House, and can be put to immediate use."
The donation included developmental toys targeted to infants and teens, two age groups that are often forgotten about during traditional toy drives. SAC donated everything from Legos and chess sets to batteries and binders.
Among SAC's subspecialties is pediatric anesthesia, offering expertise, focus, and sensitivity to the particular needs of children and their parents. The practice has developed insights into the best approaches for working with children and parents to help reduce fears, anxieties and to help assure the best possible surgical outcomes.
In 2009, SAC donated $25k to the $10 million campaign to build the Ronald McDonald House. In addition, the practice also contributed $1 million to the construction of the Levine Children's Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center in 2005.
