COLUMBIA, S.C., April 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- South University, Columbia College of Nursing and Public Health Assistant Dean Sarah A. Smith, Ph.D., has been named a 2017 Palmetto Gold Award recipient.
The Palmetto Gold Award is presented by the South Carolina Nurses Foundation and is given to nurses working in a variety of areas who exemplify excellence in their profession.
"I truly believe nursing is a calling, and I am honored to be recognized by my peers for doing the work I love," said Smith. "Nurses work selflessly every day to provide necessary and often life-saving care, and I am proud to be among those educating the next generation of these healthcare professionals."
Smith was nominated for the award based on her work with students at South University, Columbia and for her community service in the Midlands. In addition to her duties as an administrator, Smith teaches students and works with faculty to ensure that all aspects of the University's nursing programs meet academic standards and expectations. Smith also spearheaded the effort to have South University, Columbia nursing students participate in disaster preparedness training with local law enforcement and emergency responders.
Smith serves as a member of the South Carolina Deans and Directors Committee and the South Carolina Counsel of Nurse Leaders. She participated in several disaster relief efforts in the wake of the flooding that devastated parts of the Columbia area in the fall of 2015. Smith has also participated in volunteer efforts through Shandon Baptist Church and the Samaritan's Purse organization.
