MISSION VIEJO, Calif., March 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Chad Johnson, chairman of the board of South County Trojans Youth Football and Mission Viejo High School head football coach, announced today the executive board's adoption of a "whole-person development" philosophy that is consistent with the Snoop Youth Football League's (SYFL) guiding objective. South County Trojans Youth Football is the newest member of the SYFL.
"In addition to preparing our sons to compete at the highest level in youth football, the South County Trojans' executive board and coaching staff is committed to instilling core character attributes that transcend the game of football," said Coach Johnson. "Attributes that our teams, players, and families can be proud of, both on and off the field. Many of these intangibles are reflected in the SYFL's guiding objective."
The objective of the SYFL is to "…provide youth, regardless of race, color, creed, or socio-economic background, the chance to learn the values of character, integrity, discipline, and team work through football and cheer; to bring all other communities together through a common interest in sports; to promote fair play and fellowship; to teach the game elements promoting safety, enjoyment, and healthy competition."
According to Dereck Curtis, a founding board member of the South County Trojans and previous president of the Mission Viejo Cowboys Youth Football, "This guiding objective resonates with the SC Trojans' executive board and coaching staff, as we are a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural group of parents and coaches that have developed strong bonds through our shared love of football. We are excited to participate in the SYFL because, among other things, it represents a personal growth opportunity for the athletes throughout the league on many levels."
Curtis also referenced a poignant quote by the late Nelson Mandela, "Sports has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair."
Coach Johnson added, "We are grateful for the exceedingly warm welcome and hospitality that the SYFL has extended to the SC Trojans' family throughout our chapter's onboarding process, and we look forward to extending the same graciousness and hospitality to our sister chapters this season as we hit the field in competition."
As previously announced, the South County Trojans will feature six unlimited weight class divisions: 14U, 12U, 11U, 10U, 8U, and 6U, as well as cheerleading squads.
