
Intensivist and physician executive will lead Sound Critical Care programs caring for more than 170,000 critically ill patients each year
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Sound Physicians announced today the appointment of Sergio Zanotti, MD, FCCM, to Chief Executive Officer, Critical Care, putting him at the helm of business strategy for the medical group's Critical Care specialty.
In this role, Dr. Zanotti will oversee operations for programs that care for more than 170,000 critically ill patients annually. He will work closely with regional and specialty leadership and Sound's hospital and health system partners nationwide to support clinical programs that apply the latest evidence-based practices and consistently achieve outstanding patient outcomes in alignment with partner objectives. He will also continue working with physician leadership in development across all clinical specialties at Sound.
Dr. Zanotti is board-certified in Critical Care Medicine and Neurocritical Care. An accomplished physician executive, intensivist, educator, and nationally recognized leader in critical care, he was honored with the Barry A. Shapiro Memorial Award for Excellence in Critical Care Management, awarded by the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2022. For his contributions to critical care, he has received numerous Presidential Citations from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and teaching awards.

Dr. Matchett will support the transition through the end of 2026 and will continue to serve Sound in an advisory capacity, supporting special projects and strategic initiatives.
A graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción in Paraguay, Dr. Zanotti completed his medical residency and served as chief resident at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, where he also completed a fellowship in Critical Care medicine. Dr. Zanotti is a prolific author, lecturer, and researcher who has written more than 100 articles, book chapters, and abstracts, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook of Critical Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine Self-Assessment in Adult Multiprofessional Critical Care. He hosts the popular "Critical Matters," a podcast covering a wide range of topics in the practice of Critical Care medicine.
