Sotera® Wireless Acquires Reflectance Medical Inc.
-Acquisition Expands Opportunities in Military, EMS and Emergency Markets-
-Combined Technologies to Benefit Providers Treating Critically Ill and Injured Patients-
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sotera® Wireless, Inc. today announced its acquisition of Reflectance Medical Inc. (RMI), a privately held company that has developed first-of-its kind technology aimed at detecting potentially life threatening conditions in critically ill patients, including those who have suffered trauma injuries. The acquisition will broaden the range of patient parameters measured by Sotera's ViSi® Mobile System and enable Sotera to expand into new healthcare settings in and outside of the hospital.
"Our ViSi Mobile System is the preeminent platform for novel sensing technologies, and we are excited to venture beyond the scope of traditional patient vital signs in our effort to transform care," said Tom Watlington, Sotera chief executive officer. "Combining the power of our platform with RMI's novel technology will add value for customers, enable us to compete more effectively and extend our reach into military, emergency medical services and trauma markets."
The acquisition expands Sotera's patented technology portfolio to include RMI's FDA-cleared Mobile CareGuide™ technology for the measurement of two parameters that provide physiological information beyond the scope of vital signs: muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2), to determine the adequacy of tissue perfusion, and muscle pH, an indication of acidosis.
Continuous and noninvasive monitoring of tissue metabolism can be used to determine when a patient has undetected internal bleeding and may be in danger of going into shock. The goal of resuscitation from shock is to reverse acidosis and restore adequate blood flow and oxygen to all organs. Rapid management and treatment of traumatic injuries and shock has been shown to help save lives and reduce complications.
The ViSi Mobile System is the first body-worn vital signs monitoring platform to measure all vital signs continuously and non-invasively with intensive care unit (ICU) level accuracy for non-ICU patients. The comprehensive system is designed to enhance patient safety and care quality by connecting clinicians with their patients anywhere, any time and allowing early detection of patient deterioration.
Sotera has been awarded funds under a government contract to integrate RMI's technology with the ViSi Mobile platform and ruggedize the system for emergency transport vehicles.
"We look forward to working with Sotera on the technology integration that can deliver important new clinical information and become the standard in the evaluation of critically ill and injured patients," said Dr. Babs Soller, RMI president and chief executive officer.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
