SOPHIA Launches "Get Schooled With Bill Nye"

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- High school students wanting to get a jumpstart on college can now take a free online college-level course on SOPHIA.org and "Get Schooled with Bill Nye." One lucky student who completes a SOPHIA course will also win the chance to star in a video with Bill Nye the Science Guy.

"While the cost of college continues to rise, we don't believe a student's academic future should be determined by a price tag," said Allison Gage, president of SOPHIA.org. "We want to empower students to find new and innovative ways to get a degree. Our program is proven to be unique, effective and affordable, which is evident in our 85 percent completion rate."

To be eligible for the grand prize*, high school students must successfully complete one course through SOPHIA's Pathways for College Credit and submit a short 140-character entry about why they want to meet Bill Nye. Students can register from now until December 2; all coursework must be completed by January 15.

"For 20 years I've been encouraging students to think outside the box when it comes to science," Nye said. "Now, I'm challenging students to use that same thinking when it comes to their college education by researching options and building a plan that will work for them."

SOPHIA.org is a social education platform that provides free resources including 36,000 academic tutorials on a variety of subjects. The site also offers free college readiness resources that include ACT test prep; College Prep Pathways in algebra, statistics and biology; and College Success Skills to help students navigate the college experience. In addition, SOPHIA offers an affordable path to a college degree with SOPHIA Pathways for College Credit – online courses for college credit priced at $329 per course.
