Sonic Solutions and Marvell Announce New Partnership to Expand Reach of RoxioNow™ and DivX Plus™ HD
Integration offers access to premium entertainment and high-quality Internet video on leading connected consumer electronics
NOVATO, Calif. and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonic Solutions® (Nasdaq: SNIC) and Marvell, a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today announced a new strategic partnership that will expand the reach of RoxioNow™ and DivX Plus™ HD technology on connected consumer electronics devices. As part of the collaboration, RoxioNow will be integrated into HDTV and Blu-ray Disc player chipsets and DivX Plus HD Certification will be incorporated on Blu-ray Disc player system-on-a-chip (SoCs) for playback of DivX MKV video files in 1080p. Both Marvell and Sonic will be demonstrating these solutions at CES 2011.
With built-in RoxioNow capabilities, consumers of Marvell-based HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players can enjoy instant access to a wide array of premium entertainment offerings streamed directly to their sets over the Internet, including new-release movies and hit TV shows.
DivX Plus HD Certification ensures that Blu-ray Disc players with the Marvell® ARMADA™ 1000 System-on-a-Chip (SoC) provide playback of DivX Plus HD H.264 video in a .mkv file container using the USB slot, via any optical disc, or streaming from the home network for easy viewing in the living room. In addition, DivX Plus HD also powers special DVD-like features, including automated chapter points, enhanced trick play, and multiple video, audio, and sub-title tracks.
"Marvell is known for creating breakthrough technology and innovative products for virtually all of the leading consumer electronic manufacturer brands, and so this new partnership furthers the growth of two very important initiatives for us—RoxioNow and DivX Plus HD Certification," said Mark Ely, President of Strategy, Sonic Solutions. "We will continue to see the expansion of our relationships with leading IC vendors such as Marvell as we execute upon our vision of powering entertainment from Hollywood to home."
"Consumer electronics companies want to provide easy access to both Hollywood and Internet video built in directly to their devices, and that's just what Sonic offers," said Gaurav Shah, General Manager of Marvell's Digital Entertainment Business Unit. "By integrating RoxioNow and DivX Plus HD Certification, we can provide consumer electronic manufacturers streaming of high-quality premium content as well as playback of DivX .mkv video files in 1080p."
The RoxioNow platform serves a broad range of premium content, including new movies and next-day TV programs, to a growing, multi-manufacturer ecosystem of home and mobile electronics. RoxioNow enables storefronts for brick and mortar retailers, cable operators, PC manufacturers, game system vendors, consumer electronics makers, and Hollywood studios' direct-to-consumer initiatives. The platform allows these companies to participate in the entertainment supply chain, add value to product offerings, and form ongoing relationships with customers. "Powered by RoxioNow™" stores enable consumers to instantly rent and purchase high-quality entertainment on their favorite devices and, through the RoxioNow online entertainment library, access their content at any time, on any RoxioNow-powered device.
DivX Plus HD Certification is the premium level of certification available from DivX, optimized for consumer electronics products and supports the playback of all content created with DivX software. Available on www.divx.com, DivX Plus Software allows users to create and playback H.264 video in an .mkv file container. DivX Plus HD Certified devices will playback all previous versions of DivX video, and DivX Plus HD video files with the .mkv file extension and AAC audio created with third-party tools. DivX software tools allow users to mobilize their DivX content for playback on over 400 million DivX Certified devices.
