Sonian Takes Archive and Search to the Cloud with Opscode
Deploys Opscode Hosted Chef™ to Automate Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure Powering Archive and Search Service, Enabling 99.99 Percent Uptime and Reducing Time to New Capacity from Weeks to Days
SEATTLE, April 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Opscode®, the leader in cloud infrastructure automation, today announced that Sonian, the pioneer in cloud-powered email archiving and search, has deployed Opscode Hosted Chef™. Sonian is using Hosted Chef to automate configuration, environment and application management across the multiple cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) providers powering the company's innovative archive and search service.
Sonian's cloud-powered information archiving platform enables 11,000 customers to address their eDiscovery needs, achieve regulatory compliance, and reduce IT costs. To power its service, Sonian leverages a dynamic cloud infrastructure integrating multiple cloud providers including Amazon Web Services and Rackspace. Using Hosted Chef to automate its multiple cloud deployments, Sonian can manage all its IaaS instances from a single point of view, providing maximum system visibility and control. Leveraging Chef Community cookbooks for Windows and Linux, Sonian created a code-based blueprint for managing its infrastructure, automating everything from basic configuration to sophisticated application deployment.
"Our infrastructure is fluid, so we needed an automation solution that was super flexible and easy to learn. Hosted Chef is both," said Pete Zimmerman, VP of Service and Operations, Sonian. "It easily plugs into any cloud API, then automates everything up the stack, making our service faster, better and rock-solid."
"Using the near limitless capacity of the cloud for email archive and search makes perfect sense and Sonian has nailed it," said Adam Jacob, Chief Customer Officer, Opscode. "By embracing infrastructure as code with Hosted Chef, Sonian now has the flexibility to scale their service as far as demand requires with maximum consistency."
Using Hosted Chef, Sonian achieved the following results:
- 99.99 Percent Uptime: Sonian used Hosted Chef's comprehensive code history of all changes to its infrastructure to create Sensu, an open source system monitoring tool. Combining Hosted Chef and Sensu, Sonian has automated system monitoring to ensure all configurations, applications and systems are consistently operational.
- Minimum Time to New Capacity: Because Hosted Chef enables Sonian to deploy infrastructure as code, the company can write configuration recipes once and reuse many times over, reducing the time to new cloud resources from weeks to days.
- Maximum Visibility: In addition to its comprehensive code repository, Hosted Chef's collection of Knife command line plugins to the APIs for all major public cloud gives Sonian the ability to manage its multiple cloud deployments from a single view with full transparency into its infrastructure. Now, Sonian has the freedom to use multiple cloud platforms and easily move its applications between these cloud deployments as needed.
