Sonia Sotomayor, Junot Díaz and Tony Jimenez Among Hispanics Honored At 29th Hispanic Heritage Awards
VIENNA, Va., Sept. 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The 29th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards honored Latino celebrities and their accomplishments across a variety of genres, including music, literature, business and government and recognized the contributions and accomplishments of Latino leaders while celebrating cultural pride and the great promise to America.
The event was filmed at the historic Warner Theater in Washington, DC and was hosted by cast members from Orange is the New Black stars Elizabeth Rodriguez and Berto Colon.
The night was a huge success filled with performances from Grammy-Winning Singer J Balvin; Icon Angelica Maria; Billboard's "one of the top new artists to look out for" Jason Cerda; Placido Domingo Awardee Opera Singer Ailyn Pérez; Grammy Winning La Santa Cecilia; Singer Nicholas Rodriguez; and the Fania All-Stars and Nicholas Rodriguez sang a powerful rendition of "Hallelujah" during a moving tribute to the victims of Orlando's Pulse nightclub massacre.
During the broadcast, Tony Jimenez, President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MicroTech was presented the Hispanic Heritage Award for Technology by Singer/Actor, JW Cortes and award-winning filmmaker, producer and entrepreneur, Moctesuma Esparza. The audience of more than 2,000 people included members of Congress, White House officials, ambassadors, business and community leaders, celebrities and entertainers. The evening was co-hosted by more than 40 top national Latino organizations.
The 29th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards will be broadcast nationally on PBS on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 10:00 p.m. EST as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
Created by the White House in 1987 to commemorate the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hispanic Heritage Awards are considered one of the highest honors for Hispanics in the United States.
