Solera Health, ExercisABILITIES Aim to Stop Diabetes in its Tracks
Integrated network pairs at-risk Minnesotans with unique prevention and wellness program
PHOENIX, Dec. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Solera Health, a leading integrated community network, welcomes Rochester, MN-based health and wellness facility ExercisABILITIES into its national network of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-recognized diabetes prevention program (DPP) providers.
Eighty-six million American adults are living with prediabetes. To combat this epidemic, diabetes prevention programs recognized by the CDC, through public and private partners like Solera and ExercisABILITIES, work with people with prediabetes on lifestyle changes that will reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and improve their overall health.
ExercisABILITIES provides the DPP intervention via an educational program focused on better eating habits and increased physical activity. Led by registered dietician and lifestyle coach Laurie Brengman, RD/LN and supported by a team of certified exercise physiologists, their Learn to Be Fit classes feature an innovative blend of classroom-based education about exercise and making healthy choices, e.g., learning how to read a food label, dealing with stress, etc., free exercise classes and gym passes, and periodic healthy happy hours to encourage social connections among participants. Over two years, the Learn to Be Fit classes have consistently resulted in an average five percent weight loss among DPP participants, which translates into a greater than 50 percent reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
"Solera and ExercisABILITIES are both dedicated to stemming the tide of widespread diabetes through early intervention," said Melanie Brennan, founder and director of ExercisABILITIES. "Solera's technology and health plan relationships helps us identify those at risk so we can start them on their path to long term lifestyle changes and hopefully preventing the onset of this disease."
"We are excited to match ExercisABILITIES to individuals at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes in Minnesota as we continue to expand our community footprint of diabetes prevention programs nationwide," said Brenda Schmidt, Solera Health's CEO. "Based on their proven results, we know that DPP participants are in good hands with Melanie, Laurie, and their dedicated staff as they work to help them eat better and exercise more – driving lasting health benefits."
