Soldiers' Angels: Memorial Day Call to Action
Troop Support Nonprofit Challenges America
PASADENA, Calif., May 12, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Soldiers' Angels calls on all Americans to actively observe Memorial Day this May 30 by participating in an official Moment of Remembrance or undertaking other acts in honor of the over 1.3 million service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Americans often observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials, attending parades, concerts and memorial service, flying the flag at half-staff until noon, or gratefully enjoying weekend vacations and celebrations in "the land of the free because of the brave."
"It's the testimonies of the lives of our heroes that allow us our everyday lives," says Executive Director Toby Nunn. "We owe much more than a simple remembrance, but this day and moment allow us to keep it fresh in our minds, especially with all that is going on with our Armed Forces today."
Soldiers' Angels challenges Americans to take up additional acts of remembrance this Memorial Day, such as visiting VA hospitals to hear stories of patients' fellow soldiers who didn't come back, telling family stories of sacrificial service on blogs or Facebook, or reading about fallen heroes on websites such as Honor the Fallen (militarytimes.com/valor). Throwing a care package party or writing letters for a hard-hit unit also honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while encouraging those still fighting (for info, email [email protected]).
Established by Congress, National Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause in an act of remembrance for one minute on Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time to honor all who have died in service to America. The Moment can be as simple as ringing a bell, a moment of silence or a prayer, or singing at a concert, etc.
Please make a commitment to promote the National Moment of Remembrance and other Memorial Day activities through local leaders and businesses. This is a time to come together in honor of those who have given their lives so that we may continue to live free. In this shared remembrance and shared activities, we connect in gratitude as one America.
