"CareerCast's best jobs in engineering and IT – two foundations of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) sector – are shaping the landscape of 21st century America," says Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast. "One of the brightest spots in the employment picture for the past few years has been the tech sector, and today's top talent have their pick of jobs with generous salaries and great benefits."
For instance, a survey by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and other engineering societies found an almost 5% jump in average salary for engineers from 2011 to 2013 during the recession. That's right in line with the national average salary of $104,270 that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects for mechanical engineers this year. Among the top-rated engineering jobs, petroleum engineers earn the highest average annual salary at $130,280.
The BLS projects six IT and engineering careers will grow by at least 20% over the next eight years. Leading the way with a 27% projected growth reate is biomedical engineer. Next is computer systems analyst, with projected hiring growth of 25% by 2022.
For job seekers looking to enter one of these careers, it takes more than learning the current landscape to flourish. Aspiring IT and engineering professionals need to be one step ahead and "adaptability" is an essential quality, which means staying ahead of new technological advancements.
