MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., Jan. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study* conducted by Kathy Kaehler, celebrity fitness trainer and founder of Sunday Set-Up, a healthy eating plan, in partnership with SodaStream International, Ltd. (NASDAQ: SODA), tracked the beverage consumption habits of 16 participants across the U.S. outfitted with a SodaStream sparkling water maker in their homes. The 4-week study revealed that on average, participants had increased their water intake by 46 percent by the final week of the research; that equates to drinking 7.5 more 8 oz. glasses of water per week. Women, in particular, boosted their water intake by 72 percent (more than 9.5 glasses per week).
The ability to carbonate their water was gleaned as the main reason for participants to drink more of it, and less sugar-based drinks. Consumption of sugar-based drinks – defined as regular/diet soda, and energy drinks - decreased by nearly 40 percent, and in multiple cases was completely removed from a participant's diet. Of the respondents, men and parents (male and female) were more effective in decreasing sugar-based drinks from their diets. Men cut their sugar-based drink intake by 56 percent (vs. females at 32 percent) and parents decreased their consumption by 48 percent (vs. non-parents at 28 percent). Furthermore, the ability to carbonate their water encouraged the majority of participants to drink more of it.
Study participants were asked to track their fluid intake over 4 weeks. After a week of baseline reporting, they were provided a SodaStream sparkling water maker machine for in home use. Participants logged their intake of fluids: water (sparkling, still or fruit infused), water-based drinks such as coffee, tea, lemonade and water-based smoothies, sugar-based drinks (soda and energy drinks), alcohol, almond milk and juices.
"The study proved that a SodaStream at home considerably increases overall water intake and helps cut down on the consumption of sugary drinks," said Kaehler. "In fact, 78 percent of study participants indicated that by having a SodaStream, they acquired a desire to drink more water. This reinforces my belief that SodaStream can help spark truly healthy habits."
These findings are consistent with SodaStream's most recent survey** which revealed that Americans who own a sparkling water maker consume 43 percent more water and water-based beverages than average Americans. Water-based beverages were defined as tap and still water as well as sparkling water, flavored sparkling water and drinks made using a home sparkling water maker, excluding sodas and juices.
As a part of SodaStream's 2015 goals, the leading sparkling water maker manufacturer is taking steps to drive consumers to drink more water, more often, as part of a healthy lifestyle. Kathy's study marks the beginning of a partnership that will promote the benefits of hydration, such as calorie control, fresh looking skin, increased energy and lower stress levels.
"Consumers are always looking for simple ways to improve their health," said Daniel Birnbaum, CEO of SodaStream. "With Kathy Kaehler's help, we demonstrated that SodaStream can do just that. Her study directly supports what we have seen in previous research - that SodaStream helps you drink more water, and less sugary beverages, by making it easier and fun to do so."
