MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., June 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- SodaStream International Ltd. (NASDAQ: SODA), the No. 1 sparkling water brand in the world, has been selected as the clear favorite in a blind taste test for the second year in a row. A study conducted by the brand in celebration of National Hydration Day found that participants strongly preferred the taste of Los Angeles tap water carbonated with a SodaStream over competing bottled brands. The taste test challenges consumers' perception about their ability to differentiate between sparkling water brands.

A recent survey commissioned by SodaStream, conducted by ORC International's Online CARAVAN® Omnibus found that 83 percent of sparkling water drinks had a preferred brand of sparkling water, and 59 percent of that subset said they could tell the difference between competing water brands. The 2017 survey was among a demographically representative sample of 1,017 adults, comprised of 506 men and 511 women 18 or older. Of the total sample, 394 respondents said they drank sparkling water within the previous 12 months. The research found that 31 percent of drinkers consider themselves loyal to just one brand of sparkling water, but 55 percent of those surveyed said they consistently drink the same brand of sparkling water. Those who were brand loyal had faith in their palates: 84 percent of them said they were able to tell the difference between competitors. Sixty-four percent of respondents who said they always or almost always drank the same brand claimed they could taste a difference between competing brands.
However, SodaStream's blind taste test found different results. 93 percent of taste test participants could differentiate the taste between sparkling water brands, compared to ORC's 84 percent. In addition, 93 percent of taste test participants preferred the taste of Los Angeles tap water made sparkling with a SodaStream. When asked if price contributed to purchasing decisions, 59 percent of taste test participants responded that the cost of a sparkling water brand did influence their decision.
"We are thrilled to be picked as the preferred sparkling water for the second consecutive year," says Jecka Glasman, General Manager of SodaStream North America. "Encouraging healthy hydration is something we strive for at SodaStream. Only 24 percent of individuals are drinking the physician recommend six to eight glasses a day. We've found that sparkling water helps people increase their water consumption, and SodaStream owners drink three more glasses of water each day."
"To be chosen over other sparkling water brands is a huge accomplishment," explained Glasman. "We want to show how easy and cost effective it is to create sparkling water at home – all while reducing your carbon footprint. SodaStream offers these three benefits – which no other competing brand can."
The blind taste test was held on June 20, 2017 at The Rooftop at SIXTY Beverly Hills. SodaStream offered over 30 health and wellness influencers, media personalities and reporters five unmarked varieties of sparkling water, including Perrier, San Pellegrino, SmartWater Sparkling, and Los Angeles tap water made sparkling using SodaStream's low and medium settings.
