NEW YORK, March 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The Society of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick in the City of New York, the oldest charity in New York City, today announced that it has decided to cancel its Anniversary Dinner, scheduled for March 17, 2020, in the interest of the health and safety of its members. This marks the third time in the Society's two hundred thirty six year history that the Anniversary Dinner has not been held. The previous two occasions occurred in 1847 and 1848, when funds were sent to Ireland to assist in relief efforts of the Great Famine.
The Society will continue its mission to provide charity in our communities and hopes for the health and safety of its members, their families and friends, particularly at this anxious time. It is also initiating a special member appeal to facilitate its charitable giving, which has been prioritized in favor of scholarships for New York City students, Irish arts and cultural organizations and immigration assistance.
