Society of Gynecologic Oncologists Changes Name to Society of Gynecologic Oncology

Long-standing medical organization's name now reflects new membership base

CHICAGO, May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) has announced that it has revised its name to "The Society of Gynecologic Oncology." The name change, which was approved at the Society's 42nd Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer® this past March in Orlando, Florida, recognizes SGO's expanded membership which now includes representatives from the entire cancer care team, including medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, researchers, gynecologic oncology nurses, palliative care specialists and social workers.

"The Society felt this was an intuitive change that better reflects our members' specialties within cancer care," says Dr. John Curtin, President of the SGO. "In today's ever evolving healthcare landscape, SGO recognizes that it is no longer just a gynecologic oncologist who is treating women's cancer malignancies, but rather it is a team of healthcare experts who care for women with gynecologic cancers and have a shared commitment to cure and prevent these diseases."

In addition to the recent name change, SGO has also modified its mission statement to acknowledge that SGO members not only treat patients with gynecologic cancers, but also play a critical role in the prevention of gynecologic cancers in women around the world. SGO plans to transition its new name in a multi-phase process throughout the remainder of the year.

The SGO is a national medical specialty organization of physicians and allied healthcare professionals who are trained in the comprehensive management of women with malignancies of the reproductive tract.  Its purpose is to improve the care of women with gynecologic cancer by encouraging research, disseminating knowledge which will raise the standards of practice in the prevention and treatment of gynecologic malignancies, and cooperating with other organizations interested in women's health care, oncology and related fields.
