MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics announced today the four Compliance and Business Ethics champions who will be honored during its 6th Annual International Compliance and Ethics Awards ceremony to take place in Chicago, Illinois, Monday, September 13, 2010, from 7 to 10 PM. This event, which occurs each year during the Compliance and Ethics Institute, honors organizations and individuals that advocate for and embrace compliance and business ethics. This year's Compliance & Ethics Institute is being held September 12-15, 2010, Chicago, Illinois.
"This year's awards carry on our longstanding SCCE/HCCA tradition of formally acknowledging the significant contributions of those compliance pioneers who helped pave the way for today's progress and achievements by the compliance and ethics profession. These SCCE awards pay tribute to the contributions of two organizations and two individuals whose foresight and vision has made a difference for those in our profession and for society worldwide," said Odell Guyton, CCEP, Co-Chair of the SCCE Advisory Board, Director of Compliance for Microsoft Corporation.
Award Recipients
The recipients of the SCCE 6th Annual International Compliance and Ethics Award are "recognized by their peers as pioneers and leaders in the compliance and ethics profession," said Guyton. This year's award recipients are:
- Marc Dettmann, Retired CEO of the University of Wisconsin Faculty Practice Plan, provided critical assistance and resources to our organization during our startup. Marc provided equipment, space, travel expense and donated much of Roy Snell's time. We had nothing and no hope of financing the effort. Without his assistance much of what we accomplished in the early years never could have happened.
- University of Louisville Health Sciences Center; award to be accepted by Dr. Larry Cook, Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, University of Louisville. The University of Louisville Health Sciences Center is receiving the award for their commitment and the essential resources they contributed to the start-up of the Health Care Compliance Association. The University of Louisville Health Sciences Center allowed staff time, dedicated financial resources, and demonstrated buy-in to an undefined profession with a vision of what compliance would be in the future.
- Kurt Eichenwald, Author of The Informant, Pulitzer Prize Finalist. As author, award-winning journalist, and popular speaker Mr. Eichenwald has shown the costs of compliance failures and the thinking that leads to them. And, along the way Kurt has been a vocal champion for the compliance profession.
- OECD Working Group on Bribery in International Business Transactions; award to be accepted by Dr. Maria Gavouneli, Ph.D. (Cantab.), LL.M. (Cantab.), Assistant Professor of International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Athens. The leadership demonstrated by the OECD's Working Group on Bribery in International Business Transactions made the SCCE's decision easy. The Further Recommendations for Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions of 26 November 2009, and the Good Practice Guidance included in Appendix 2, represent landmarks in the promotion and recognition of effective compliance and ethics programs around the world.
"We are grateful for the considerable contributions these organizations and individuals are making to help advance the compliance and ethics profession. Their work speaks for itself," said SCCE CEO Roy Snell.
The criteria used in selecting award recipients include:
- Outstanding performance and achievement in the field of corporate compliance
- Leadership abilities that contribute to the integrity of the profession
- Contribution and leadership efforts in the development of global growth and partnerships that enhance global compliance communications
- Outstanding personal commitment to further the compliance profession
- Recognition for achievements in academic development promoting the profession of compliance and ethics, technology focused on assisting compliance professionals with policies and procedures, and development of programs focused on integrity and ethical behaviors.
