Smooch.com Unveil the Most Bizarre Gifts Online Daters Have Received
LONDON, May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
A new survey from Smooch.com, the UK's favourite and free online dating site, asked 1,000 members for their first date horror stories. The results uncovered that British men have an interesting idea of 'what women want' when it comes to first dates.
While almost 20% of women think flowers are a suitable gift on a first date, the results show that is not what they're getting. Some of the extreme items brought to a first date include:
- A live lobster
- A tin of prunes
- A plastic crocodile wrapped in men's pants
- Reduced-price loaf of bread
- An electric tin opener

Lucy Clarke, Marketing Manager at Smooch.com, said of the findings:
"While some of these gifts are practical, some of them are just plain weird. Our studies show that women are still traditionalists when it comes to dating; a bunch of flowers still go a long way. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like that's what they're getting!
"We'll be running a campaign throughout May with first date tips for online daters. Hint: Turning up with a plastic crocodile wrapped in your pants is not recommended."
The survey also found:
- A third of male respondents expect a kiss on a first date compared to just 15% of women
- 47% of people "just hope their date turns up".
- Most common gifts include flowers, wine and chocolates
