Smithsonian Veterans Day Ceremony Dedicated to Medal of Honor Recipients

In commemoration of Veterans Day 2010, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and Smithsonian Gardens will conduct a special ceremony in collaboration with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to dedicate an oak sapling to honor recipients of the Medal of Honor.

In a special dedication ceremony, Smithsonian officials and representatives from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society will dedicate an oak tree on the museum grounds in honor of recipients of the Medal of Honor. They will also spread soil around the sapling that has been collected from various battlefields from around the United States and the world.
Medal of Honor recipient and special guest, 1st Lt. Brian Thacker will speak on behalf of the society. At 9:20 a.m. a "Call to Assembly" will be issued by a bugler, and guests will form a procession behind the Smithsonian Institution Honor Guard and walk from the museum entrance to the ceremony site.
The soil samples, collected by Smithsonian Gardens staff with assistance from the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, members of the military and the Honorable Kathleen Stephens, U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Korea represent 16 sites related to 11 wars or conflicts fought by the United States.
