SMIC Beijing's New 12-inch Fab Awarded LEED Gold Certification
SHANGHAI, May 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- SMIC Beijing's new 12-inch fab, namely Semiconductor Manufacturing North China (Beijing) Corporation 12-inch fab ("Beijing JV 12-inch fab"), was awarded the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC). SMIC was given the award due to its green energy building design and measures in environmental protection, making this the first time for any semiconductor fab from Mainland China to receive such an award.
USGBC's LEED certification is a green building certification program that is currently used around the world in all types of building projects. LEED has been used in 103 countries and is considered the most thorough and influential when it comes to its green building rating system. LEED's evaluation system is done through a comprehensive survey in sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. To determine the level of LEED certification, the thresholds are divided into four levels of certification: platinum, gold, silver and certified.
SMIC's Beijing JV 12-inch fab is built in strict accordance to the design requirements for LEED certification and is 25% lower than LEED's standard in energy consumption. The materials used to build and decorate the fab such as paint, adhesives, sealants are all LEED certified. Usage of VOC (volatile organic compound) is strictly controlled and all the materials are ensured that no chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) has been used. In addition, the construction process is supervised by experienced LEED professionals.
S.Richard Fedrizzi, CEO and Founding Chairman of USGBC sent his congratulations to Dr. Tzu-Yin Chiu, Chief Executive Officer of SMIC and Chairman of SMNC, "LEED certification identifies SMNC Beijing 12-inch FAB Project as a showcase example of sustainable design and demonstrates your leadership in transforming the building industry."
On 15 May 2015, Ms. Li Fei, General Manager of EMSI-China and Senior LEED Certification Expert visited SMNC's new fab to present the LEED gold certification to the construction team. This award marks an historical milestone in China's construction of semiconductor fabs. It also demonstrates SMIC's diligence in sustainable development, as well as commitment and effort in corporate social responsibility.
