DEARBORN, Mich., March 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- SME announced today that Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northeast in Pontiac, Michigan, received an Afinia H800 3D printer in recognition of their participation in SME manufacturing and career awareness activities including Manufacturing Day. SME's student outreach programs are part of its commitment to serving the manufacturing industry by promoting advanced manufacturing technology and developing a skilled workforce.
American manufacturing is currently experiencing a growing skills gap – an inability to fill positions with technologically experienced and qualified workers. SME works with schools and industry across the nation to make new technologies like 3D printing, advanced robotics and other technologies accessible and interesting to students, parents, teachers and institutions.
"The opportunity for students to experience advanced manufacturing technologies like 3D printing is a great way to generate interest in manufacturing and manufacturing careers," said Jeff Krause, SME chief executive officer. "Having an Afinia H800 in their own facility is a great hands-on way to explore and learn about advanced manufacturing. We're so pleased to offer that advantage to Oakland Schools."
The Afinia H800 received the Innovation Award from SME at the 2015 RAPID Conference in Long Beach, CA.
"Manufacturers and educators work together to add value to our workforce, and are both important constituencies that Afinia serves with our 3D printers," said John Westrum, Afinia vice president. "We're happy to support SME in their efforts to share these technologies with students."
Oakland Schools' Career Focused Education team already has plans to integrate the new technology into their manufacturing-related curricula.
"Our educators are really excited about receiving a 3D printer for our school," said Wanda Cook-Robinson, PhD, superintendent of Oakland Schools. "Our Oakland Schools Technical Campuses provide students with hands-on experience in growing industries. Support from organizations like SME and Afinia allow us to provide wonderful opportunities to our students. "
