NEW YORK, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Steel Market Development Institute's (SMDI) President, Lawrence Kavanagh, was a featured panelist at the American Metal Market's Steel Success Strategies XXX, which took place June 8-10 in New York City. SMDI is a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
Kavanagh's panel was titled, "Autobody Warfare: Aluminum Attack" and addressed materials competition in the automotive industry, the impact of smaller, more fuel-efficient engines, and related issues concerning design of future vehicles.
During his presentation, Kavanagh noted that truck and SUV body structures are remaining steel as a result of the extensive, high-value lightweighting possible with today's advanced high strength steels.
"There's more collaboration between the steel industry and automakers than ever before and no shortage of innovative designs helping automakers meet their future fuel economy targets without increased use of alternative materials," said Kavanagh. "While alternative materials research higher strength and higher formability, steel has these products in the marketplace now which increases the value of our material in all vehicle applications – such as body-in-white, closures, bumpers and suspension systems."
