SAN DIEGO, Nov. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- SmartDrive Systems, a leader in driving performance solutions that reduce collisions and improve fuel efficiency, today congratulates John Watkins, Carroll Fulmer Logistics Corporation's 2015 SmartDriveR of the year. Watkins, a veteran of the U.S. Army, was selected for this recognition based on his outstanding driving performance and safety record, as measured by his SmartDrive Safety Score. As reported through the last week in October, Watkins achieved a safety score of 10, which is considered best-in-class by Carroll Fulmer's drivers.
"We commend John for his outstanding record of safe driving, applaud his dedication to protecting company assets and the motoring public through proactive risk reduction and operational improvement, and especially thank him for his service to our country," stated Steve Mitgang, CEO of SmartDrive. "Long recognized as a benchmark fleet within the trucking industry, Carroll Fulmer uses the SmartDriveR program as a way to encourage and pay tribute to superlative safety performance that sets the standard for other fleets to emulate."
Watkins' 17-year military career included deployment to Operation Desert Storm (1990-1991) and two tours in Iraq (2003 and 2005). After transitioning to civilian life, he began driving for Carroll Fulmer in 2014. The skills, knowledge and experience gained during time spent in service to our country have served Watkins well and his remarkable record of safe driving is evidence of his personal discipline and commitment to excellence.
Using SmartDrive's video-based safety program to monitor and measure fleet-wide driving performance, Carroll Fulmer leverages the SmartDriveR program as a means of encouraging friendly competition amongst employees to minimize driving-related risks and reward safe driving. SmartDrive's scoring and coaching models enabled the fleet to reduce risks that are leading indicators of collisions, with results including a 70 percent reduction in speeding, 65 percent decrease in unsafe following and 16 percent improvement in seatbelt compliance. Watkins, who is being recognized for his driving performance, was honored in front of his peers at a company-wide gathering and received a financial award of $500, sponsored by SmartDrive, Meritor WABCO and Meritor.
"John has an exceptional history of accident-free miles and is a role model to others within the fleet," noted Josh Fulmer, risk manager at Carroll Fulmer. "Our drivers are critical to our business success and we pride ourselves on doing everything we can to keep them safe. John exemplifies our dedication to excellent service and overall operational integrity."
The SmartDrive program offers fleets configurable and easy-to-use coaching tools that allow drivers and managers to collaborate to examine and enhance driving performance. Customized to align with each fleet's unique priorities, the SmartDrive safety score serves as a fair and consistent basis for identifying risk and implementing strategies to reduce accident frequency and severity. SmartDrive's SmartChoice program gives fleets unprecedented freedom to choose the optimal level of video protection to fit their business, and ensures that technology investments are protected with a fully upgradable platform.
