DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. and FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Feb. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A telecommunicator with the Addison Consolidated Dispatch Center has been recognized for her outstanding efforts to aid a citizen in need using Smart911, the County's 9-1-1 service aimed at improving emergency response. The Emergency Telephone System Board of DuPage County (DuPage ETSB) presented Telecommunicator Deanna Knox with a SmartSave Award from Smart911 which honors and rewards call-takers, dispatchers and emergency responders who are able to effectively use information in a Smart911 Safety Profile to positively affect the outcome of an emergency.

On September 23, 2013, after Knox received a 9-1-1 hang up call from a citizen, she attempted to call back the incoming number but received no answer. The citizen had created a Safety Profile with Smart911 which was automatically displayed on the screen and provided information on the caller, including details on her son who had medical and cognitive disabilities. Knox dispatched officers to the address with the information provided in the Smart911 profile. Officers were able to approach the scene, a domestic altercation between mother and son, and successfully de-escalate the situation.
"When we receive a hang up call it's our procedure to attempt to call back to determine the nature of the emergency," stated Knox, a telecommunicator just completing one year of service. "When there was no response, I used the information that the citizen had provided about her household to send officers to these scene. Without the Smart911 profile, officers would not have known what type of situation they were approaching or that they may need to de-escalate a domestic altercation."
DuPage ETSB purchased this software to enhance delivery of 9-1-1 services according to the State of Illinois mandate for the Premise Alert Program for people with special needs. The added bonus is that Smart911can benefit all citizens, not just those with special needs.
"We implemented Smart911 in all of DuPage County three years ago for this very reason, to save time and better protect both our citizens and first responders," said DuPage ETSB Chairman Jerome "JR" McBride. "Deanna did an excellent job of utilizing the information in the Safety Profile to arm our officers with the information they needed to approach the scene safely. I am so glad this citizen recognized the benefit of Smart911 and took the time to create their Safety Profile."
Smart911 allows citizens to create a Safety Profile for their household that includes any information they want 9-1-1 and response teams to have in the event of an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call-taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information. With Smart911, responders can be aware of many details they would not have known previously. Fire crews can arrive at a house fire knowing how many people live in the home and the location of bedrooms, EMS can be advised of allergies or specific medical conditions, police can have the photo of a missing child in seconds rather than hours and more.
Introduced nearly three years ago by Rave Mobile Safety, the most trusted software partner for campus and public safety, Smart911 has been adopted in 33 states and more than 450 municipalities. It has been credited with positively impacting emergency situations across the U.S., including a missing child case in Arkansas, a seizure victim in Nashville and a heart condition patient in New York.
The service is funded by DuPage ETSB and is free to everyone. Residents, as well as those who may work or go to school in DuPage County, are encouraged to create their Safety Profile with Smart911 today to have their information immediately available to 9-1-1. Smart911 data is private and secure, is only used for emergency responses and available to the 9-1-1 system in the event of an emergency call.
