PEORIA, Ill., Nov. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Smart Tower Systems LLC, a company specializing in structural health monitoring, has created new technology for owners, operators and engineers that can reduce operating costs, maximize tower assets and increase the reliability of poles, self-supporting towers and guyed mast structures.
In the past, structural health was typically monitored through on-site evaluations that required a lot of time and money for the effort. The new Smart Tower System, however, can continuously monitor the health and actual responses of a structure subjected to storms, earthquakes and other events. This monitoring is all done remotely and securely from an office or mobile phone.
Alerts are generated when an unexpected structural response is detected or when a site is subjected to high winds or other extreme loading conditions. The Smart Tower System can be integrated with on-site anemometers or can communicate directly with local weather stations.
This technology provides valuable information to operators and engineers for the early detection of structural issues. Mark Allen and Dave Brinker, co-inventors, said "This information is so valuable in mitigating risk that major insurance underwriters have committed to offering premium credits for structure owners who install a Smart Tower System."
Allen further explained that the purpose-designed Smart Tower System employs complex mathematics and cutting-edge hardware to deliver a revolutionary suite of sensors and software that continuously and remotely monitor structure health for the life of a structure. Allen and Brinker both agree that, "In fact, we say the system results in 'Structures That Think.' The use of advanced, ultra-precise sensors and modern communications technology allows the generation of alerts when the structure senses extreme loading events or unexpected responses caused by extreme weather conditions, earthquakes, vandalism, slack guys, loose waveguide hardware, foundation settlements and more."
The sensors are easily mounted on a structure with universal mounting components. A specially-designed cable is used to connect the sensors to a ground control unit installed at the site. No specialized training is required for a typical installation.
The Smart Tower high-tech sensors detect and measure lateral displacements, twist and sway rotations, oscillations, natural frequencies and permanent deformations of a structure. The ground control unit installed at the site communicates all data securely to the cloud for additional post-processing into a user-friendly format. User access is easy and completely secure.
Preset or user-based parameters trigger alerts to the user. Information is stored for historical reviews, trend analyses, establishment of maintenance schedules, etc. Periodic structural health status reports are also generated to provide peace of mind to owners and operators. Tower owners can be confident that their structures are performing as expected, thanks to Smart Tower Systems.
