SMART Technologies Adds New Game-Based Learning Activity with the Launch of Monster Quiz
Newest Addition to SMART lab Offers a Team-Based Activity that Allow Students to Contribute from their Own Devices
CALGARY, Aug. 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ - SMART Technologies Inc., a leading provider of education and business collaboration solutions, announced today the launch of Monster Quiz, the latest addition to SMART lab included in the SMART Learning Suite™.
Leveraging student devices and collaboration via competition, Monster Quiz is an interactive activity that helps teachers make critical thinking fun and engaging. Teachers save precious lesson preparation time and gain insight into student comprehension by easily adding engaging, curriculum-focused games to their lessons in under five minutes. Monster Quiz is an integral development in SMART's strategy to innovate through game- and play-based learning solutions.
"We are thrilled to add another game-based activity to our lesson-building software for teachers. SMART's latest game-based innovation reinforces teacher defined lesson content and gives students and teachers insight into their performance," said Warren Barkley, CTO of SMART Technologies. "Our research shows that students need critical thinking skills to get ahead in the future workforce. We believe games help build these skills and we strive to ensure that SMART lab activities leverage intrinsic motivators such as overcoming challenges, encouraging teamwork, and just as importantly, instilling the element of fun into learning," he said.
Monster Quiz incorporates game mechanics, and thematic visual and auditory cues to create a game environment that elevates students out of their ordinary classroom experience and makes learning fun. Students are put in teams to individually answer teacher defined questions, with individual performances contributing to the team's overall score. The more correct answers a team receives, the more their monster hatches to eventually reveal a unique monster. The first group to answer all the questions correctly is the winning team.
"My students love Monster Quiz," said Ronald Fisher, fourth grade teacher at Century Elementary in Bear River City, Utah. "By taking elements of other gaming applications, my lessons are now truly interactive and I've seen more of my students excited and engaged than ever before."
