Strong pelvic floor muscles play a vital role throughout the female lifespan including pregnancy, the postpartum period, menopause and beyond. In addition to enhancing the sexual response, Kegel exercises improve core strength, an important factor in posture and balance and promote good bladder control.
"Pelvic floor muscles are some of the most underrated muscles in the female body," said Liz Miracle, MSPT, WCS: Pelvic Floor Specialist at Minna Life. "The reality is that strong, healthy pelvic floor muscles help manage changes in the body during significant life stages, yet most women don't exercise the area because they don't know if they are contracting their muscles correctly or they consider the exercise too boring."
In its new What's Your Kegel IQ? survey, Minna Life found that 17 percent of women do not know what Kegel exercises are and over half of 18-44 year olds either aren't sure or don't know how to perform Kegel exercises correctly. Furthermore, when asked when women should start practicing pelvic floor exercises, 53 percent of respondents admitted to not knowing; meanwhile, 46 percent aren't sure which methods are used to practice these exercises.
The survey also found a disconnect between women who perceive themselves as suffering from incontinence (21%) and those that experience accidental urine leakage while running, laughing, sneezing or coughing (54%). Women associate the term incontinence with old age, when in reality any leakage at all is considered incontinence. Even though urine leakage is common, it is not normal and affects both mature and young women alike.
The kGoal product and app will enable users to track and view their progress in an easy-to-read dashboard that is designed to constantly evolve. The platform will also provide users with games and other interactions that are tailored to their capabilities to encourage women to exercise consistently and thus addresses one of the biggest problems with pelvic floor exercise.
