The number of worldwide email users is projected to be almost 1.9 billion by 2013 resulting in worldwide email traffic of 507 billion messages per day.(1) Yet 80+ percent all email traffic is spam. By 2012, the anti-spam market alone is expected to be worth more than $6 billion.(2) The patents and patent applications of this ground-breaking portfolio cover a broad array of email technologies that are in common and increasing use, including technologies for tracking, detecting and blocking spam and increasing the functionalities and/or advertising capabilities of emails.
One of the three issued patents is directed to "smart" email having self-executing code embedded within the body of an email such that it is automatically executed upon an opening of the email. Another includes a method for providing an application program with an electronic message to preclude unwanted electronic messages (SPAM) from being sent over a network. The third includes web-based methods for enhancing emails with advertising, banners, links and other features. The issue fee has been paid for one of the 13 pending application which broadly claims techniques for enhancing emails based upon the context of the email, such as with advertisements, graphics, video, animation and audio.
"This technology has enormous potential to benefit both the advertiser and the consumer," said ICAP Ocean Tomo CEO Dean Becker. "Email service providers, spam filter developers, and entities involved in e-commerce and internet marketing should be interested in this technology."
