Slaight Family Foundation donation boosts World Vision's efforts to end human trafficking in East Asia

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 20, 2015 /CNW/ - The Slaight Family Foundation has announced a generous $7 million donation to be split evenly among seven Canadian non-governmental organizations, including World Vision Canada. 

The $1 million gift will boost World Vision Canada's End Trafficking in Persons (ETIP) work in Cambodia, a country that is widely known as a source, transit and destination country for human trafficking. World Vision's work has supported over 97,000 people in three regions of the country since 2011, giving the agency a strong track record and high trust in the region. 

In certain regions of East Asia, human trafficking is rampant. Through force, threats or deceit, victims are placed in slavery or slavery-like conditions where their fundamental human rights are denied. Victims include babies, children, youth and adults. The diverse forms of trafficking include the sex industry, domestic servitude, fishing boats, factories, mines, construction sites, agricultural plantations, forced marriage, or babies who are abducted and sold for adoption. Traffickers include organized crime syndicates, parents, relatives, friends, partners and neighbours.

The donations aim to support Canada's efforts in global humanitarianism. The work of these NGOs will be supported over the next four years as they aim to create change in seven unique ways across the globe.
