RESTON, Va., April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ekahau Inc., the leader in Wi-Fi-based Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) today announced that its customer Skyview High School in Nampa, Idaho won RFID Journal's "Most Innovative Use of RFID" Award, announced at RFIDLive on April 10th, 2014. The award is given to the organization with the "most novel use of RFID technology" that uniquely solves a problem and highlights Skyview High's use of Ekahau's Real-Time Location software, text-based alerting capabilities and RFID panic buttons. A Skyview High School teacher simply pushes a button or pulls down on their wearable Ekahau Wi-Fi badge in the event of a security, disciplinary or health emergency and the badge sends a request for assistance within seconds, including the event's details and location, to the school's Resource Officer, administrators and local police dispatch. Ekahau's alerting solution eliminates the need for manual dialing and map look-ups and pulling down on a badge instantly places Skyview High School in lock-down. During emergencies, dispatchers can also use Ekahau messaging software to send mass communication texts to badge-holders, directing classes away from danger without dependence on unreliable cellular networks. Lastly, by taking advantage of Skyview's existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, Ekahau's solution eliminates the need for hard-wired readers in every classroom, keeping the solution affordable.
"We don't have to feel powerless in the face of school tragedies. Parents need to ask their school board to investigate the use of RFID panic buttons. When you consider that our Ekahau safety alerting solution cost less than $35 a student, there is no reason why every school in America cannot adopt this technology," notes Officer Brad Ford, Nampa Police Officer, Skyview School Resource Officer and Idaho's "Police Officer of the Year".
"Giving law enforcement visibility into schools and enabling teacher-to-teacher communications can create safer schools and potentially save lives. We congratulate Skyview High School for setting an example for other schools and proving that location visibility can be game-changing for school safety and communications," said Mark Norris, President and CEO of Ekahau.
