LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Skyline Urology physicians continue to offer excellent care for women and have demonstrated their knowledge and experience in treating female urologic issues by earning a prestigious certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS). This sub-specialty certification is awarded to urologists and urogynecologists who can demonstrate both a history of hands-on experience in treating female urologic issues as well as a wealth of knowledge in this field.
Three of Skyline's female urologists have received this certification -- Dr. Jill Byers, Dr. Lamia Gabal and Dr. Elise Perer. The eligibility requirements include seeing a large number of FPMRS patients, performing various diagnostic tests, and treating patients with both non-invasive and surgical procedures. In addition to these strict guidelines, the physicians had to submit all their FPMRS cases for a period of six months and pass a rigorous 4 hour exam.
Stress urinary incontinence affects about 20% of American women and overactive bladder is nearly as prevalent. There is often overlap between these two conditions and it is vital to have an accurate diagnosis made by a qualified specialist before starting treatment. Pelvic organ prolapse is also common, affecting an estimated 3.3 million women in the United States. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the pelvic muscles and other supporting tissues become weak, causing the organs in the pelvis to fall out of place. These problems can have a significant impact on a woman's quality of life. Fortunately, these disorders often can be reversed with proper treatment.
In her practice, Dr. Jill Byers does a complex evaluation for women bothered by urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse concerns and, in addition to surgery, offers minimally invasive options such as neuromodulation, urethral bulking and "Bladder Botox." These options are effective alternatives to medications, which for many women are ineffective, costly, and associated with bothersome side effects. Furthermore, neuromodulation shows promise for treatment of fecal incontinence. "There are a lot of minimally invasive treatment options we can use. Botox and urethral bulking for incontinence can be done for those who are not good candidates for surgery," said Dr. Byers. "It's great to help those who don't realize there are other effective options they haven't heard of."
In addition to non-invasive treatments, Skyline's physicians are highly skilled in surgical techniques. Dr. Elise Perer completed a yearlong fellowship at Cedars-Sinai under Dr. Gary Leach after her 6 years in residency. "I'm very passionate about this field and have advanced my expertise through exceptional education and training," said Dr. Perer.
"The board puts their trust in the fact that I do these cases every day and it proves that my outcomes are good," said Dr. Lamia Gabal who received her certification in September. "It shows my commitment to this patient population and recognizes my expertise in the field by offering the highest level of care for women in urology." Dr. Gabal also trained with Dr. C. Lowell Parsons, a leader in interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome).
Only 1,090 physicians in the country have obtained this prominent certification with 5 coming from Skyline Urology. Skyline's Dr. Michael Safir and Dr. J. Antonio Alarcon have also obtained the certification. As urologists, all five physicians are uniquely qualified to provide comprehensive care not only for women with pelvic floor disorders but also for men with overactive bladder, incontinence and voiding dysfunction.
