Skyhook Launches Precision Location for IoT

BOSTON, Sept. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Skyhook, the world's leading independent location platform, today announced the launch of Precision Location for IoT, a lightweight, battery-conscious solution for integrating precision location into connected devices. Already award-winning, Skyhook's Precision Location for IoT has received a 2016 Product of the Year Award from IoT Evolution Magazine and IoT Evolution World, the leading magazine and website covering IoT technologies.

According to McKinsey Global Institute, the total IoT market will be between $3.9 trillion and $11.1 trillion by 2025, but many organizations are scrambling to embrace IoT and the benefits that come with it. Until today, IoT device manufacturers, much like wearables manufacturers, have had difficulty integrating valuable location services into IoT devices due to memory, power and bandwidth limitations of their small form-factor.

Unlike traditional hybrid positioning solutions, Skyhook's Precision Location for IoT allows compact client source code to be compiled directly into the firmware of devices and can provide location directly to the device. Precision Location for IoT provides location using many signal sources, but can also provide location to devices based on Wi-Fi alone. Designed with the next generation of IoT devices in mind, the solution is highly secure, using advanced AES encryption and binary protocols to send and receive data. Integration is both flexible and scalable.

To address the specific needs of the IoT market, Skyhook has developed two inaugural features:

• Echo: Echo allows device manufacturers to setup a server-to-server connection through Skyhook's online portal. Location responses, with identifying information, can be securely relayed in real time. This allows mapping and tracking applications to display device location information without additional round trip communication with the device.
• Sonar: Sonar is an API to request the 'last known location' for an entire fleet of devices. This useful API for consumer or industrial IoT deployments keeps data storage costs low and does not require additional infrastructure to store last known location for each unit.
