Skin Lesion Identification System to Auction on November 11th at ICAP Ocean Tomo's Fall 2010 Live IP Auction

In the US, nearly 2.5 million patients are treated each year for skin lesions such as pressure ulcers, and approximately 60,000 patients die from related complications.(1) Traditional treatment includes regular monitoring of the skin lesion by medical professionals, however, this technique has several disadvantages such as human error and the high cost of labor required to administer treatment. The assets of this lot disclose a system that provides for highly efficient, accurate, and cost effective monitoring of skin lesions. Comprised of a camera, processor, and reporting device, the system identifies and classifies skin lesions as well as evaluates the effectiveness of the treatment. The camera in the system captures a two-dimensional image of the skin lesion which is then sent to the processor and converted into a three-dimensional image. The converted image can be compared to previously stored images to track the effectiveness of treatment. As the system relies on electronic comparisons, it generates highly accurate results. In addition, the electronic nature of the stored data provides for easy storage and transfer to remote locations for reporting.
"Lesions can be treated by several methods with varying degrees of effectiveness in different patients. It is important to determine the most suitable treatment for each patient as fast as possible because in addition to reducing patient's suffering, in case of pressure ulcers, care providers suffer regulatory financial consequences and bad reputation related to lesion's frequency and duration," said co-inventor Dr. Josef Osterweil. "The accuracy of our system, with or without mining, allows the user to detect the smallest changes of the lesion thus allowing rapid adjustment of treatment."
