SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Skillz, the worldwide leader in mobile eSports, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the company two new patents. The company now has exclusive rights to a total of 13 eSports-related patents.
The first new patent, U.S. Patent 15,459,313, covers the management of video data in streams. The technology improves the process of storing and reading video metadata, allowing the platform to automatically generate video clips and highlights. Recently, tournaments including the U.S. Open have integrated AI such as IBM Watson to deliver video highlights, statistics, and other information to live audiences. Activision-Blizzard's Overwatch, available for PCs and consoles, also features an automated highlight system titled 'Play of the Game.'
The latest patent from Skillz, however, is the first to provide such a feature for mobile games, currently the largest sector of the gaming industry with $70.3 billion in annual revenue. Combined with the world's first eSports ticker Skillz announced last year, the new video management system will provide a complete eSports viewing experience for the 385 million eSports spectators around the world.
"In the age of information, nothing catches a viewer's attention like on-demand highlights and stunning data," says Andrew Paradise, CEO and founder of Skillz. "Our latest technology provides highlights automatically for mobile eSports, delivering a modern viewing experience like those rendered manually by offline sports networks."
The second patent, U.S. Patent 14,467,559, builds upon the company's core software by enabling team-based competitions for future titles. Whether online or offline, team-based gameplay is a central feature of the world's most popular activities. This latest patent by Skillz continues to grow the company's footprint in the rapidly growing mobile industry by making this essential feature available for future mobile eSports developers.
Skillz has built a robust eSports patent portfolio, including a cross-platform tournament management system, an algorithm determining whether a game exhibits fair competition, a self-service integration portal, and an eSports events platform through which anyone can organize and broadcast eSports competitions via proprietary mobile video capture and live-streaming technology.
