Six-Person Firm Giving $100,000 to Most Effective Charities
ATLANTA, Dec. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A six-person personal injury law firm based in Atlanta, Georgia, Butler Tobin, is giving away $100,000. The firm wanted to give the money where it would do the most good, so they have selected three of the top charities as ranked by GiveWell, an evidence-based charity evaluator. Butler Tobin will give $33,334 to each of the Against Malaria Foundation, Evidence Action's "Deworm the World Initiative," and GiveDirectly.
The firm's goal is to do "the greatest good for the greatest number." On its webpage devoted to the gift, the firm writes that "[f]or less than the cost of a bicycle or a leather couch, we can save children from death by malnutrition, cure blindness caused by parasitic flies, or distribute hundreds of malaria-stopping insect nets. These opportunities are too good to pass up."
"We are really fired up about doing this," explained Jeb Butler, one of the firm's founding partners. "We wanted to make a difference in the lives of people who needed it, and we love these three organizations. They allow us to help people in a way that would not have been possible even ten years ago."
"Charitable giving is a wonderful Mitzvah that impacts the lives of others," said Darren Tobin, also a founding partner of the firm. "We are very fortunate to be in this financial position. Through the good work of these organizations we have the chance to improve other lives."
As a part of the application process, each organization submitted a video that described what the organization did and how it could help people in need. Those videos, and links to other information about the charities, are available at https://www.butlertobin.com/bt-giving.
The firm plans to donate additional money in 2019. Each year, Butler Tobin sets aside a portion of the firm's profits to donate to those in need. "We helped a lot of clients in 2018," added Butler. "That means that we'll be donating substantial money in 2019."
Members of the firm say they were inspired by Peter Singer, a moral philosopher who teaches at Princeton University. Singer gave a TED Talk in 2013 describing what "effective altruism," the process of donating money in a maximally effective. Singer's TED Talk is available online and has been watched over 1.6 million times. Dr. Singer has Tweeted and posted on Facebook about Butler Tobin's giving project.
Butler Tobin handles wrongful death and personal injury litigation. The firm has achieved great results in truck accidents, car accidents, sexual assaults, and product liability cases. In one wrongful death and product liability case arising out of an exploding Jeep Grand Cherokee, the firm was co-counsel on largest Georgia verdict of the year.
As the number of alternative transportation methods have increased across Georgia and in Atlanta, Butler Tobin has found success in other areas related to car accidents. For instance, Butler Tobin has successfully handled cases arising out of bicycle accidents, motorcycle accidents, and Lyft or Uber accidents. Often, the firm is able to find insurance to cover these accidents that the firm's clients didn't even know they had, such as additional liability or uninsured/underinsured motorist ("UM") insurance.
This success has led to good things. The firm has over ninety Google reviews, all with five stars. And, of course, the firm's success has allowed this—and future—giving to people who need it most.
