Simmons College Named to President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll 8 Years in a Row
BOSTON, Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Simmons College has been named to the 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Simmons has received this honor for eight consecutive years, and is one of only 16 colleges in the country - the only one is Massachusetts - to earn the "Honor Roll with Distinction" level for six of the eight years since the Honor Roll began in 2006.
The announcement was made in December at the American Council on Education's 96th annual meeting in San Diego. The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes in the communities they serve.
Each year, the Scott/Ross Center for Community Service (S/RC) at Simmons helps facilitate the community service work of nearly 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students who provide at least 20 hours of service during the year, with more than 500 students providing service in conjunction with their academic course learning. In all, the college annually contributes nearly 228,760 hours of service to the community, including volunteer work, work-study, internships, practicum, and student-led groups.
The S/RC provides assistance to support the critical needs of more than 60 Boston-area community groups including: The Promising Pals Program, a literacy and mentoring program for students at the Timilty Middle School; city-wide health promotion and advocacy programs through the Simmons Department of Physical Therapy; and the Simmons Goes Fit program, which supports exercise and activities at the Tobin Community Center in Boston. The Center also coordinates more than a dozen initiatives led entirely by Simmons students, including tutoring and mentoring programs held at Boston Public Schools.
Simmons College Trustee and alumna Emily Scott Pottruck established the S/RC in 2000, in recognition of the College's long-time commitment to community service. The center serves the Greater Boston community by developing partnerships with community organizations while enriching and expanding students' educational and co-curricular experiences.
