Silicone Tape leader Rescue Tape responds to UL warning; Calls UL statements irresponsible and unfair
CARSON CITY, Nev., June 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Underwriters Laboratories (UL) warned Thursday that "Silicone Rescue Tape has not been evaluated by UL to the appropriate Standards for Safety" and "it is unknown if this Silicone Rescue Tape complies with UL's safety requirements." Harbor Products finds these statements appalling, irresponsible, and outright unfitting.
First and foremost, our product silicone Rescue Tape IS absolutely safe and we certify and declare that our silicone tape meets and exceeds the specifications for UL Standard 510 insulation tape.
The specifications of our silicone tape have been thoroughly tested to meet UL Standard 510 by independent testing laboratory Imanna Laboratories, and subsequently these testing results have been redundantly verified by UL's own laboratory testing. UL irresponsibly failed to mention in their press release that UL had actually performed all of the product tests necessary on our silicone tape in order to be approved for a UL Listing, and UL's product testing confirmed that our product absolutely met the testing and safety requirements of UL Standard 510. To that extent, their public warning is inappropriate and irresponsible.
Consumers and retailers should be reminded that Underwriters Laboratories is not a government agency that has the solitary authority to judge to whether a product is safe or not, but rather a private company whose only product is the recognizable UL trademark. UL is one of many Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL) that simply provide independent testing and certification, amongst other NRTLs including CSA and Met Labs. Our product has already been declared safe and having met the specifications of UL Standard 510 by an independent laboratory. Our company feels that as the leading brand of silicone tape, Rescue Tape is being singled out and attacked, while many other companies manufacture or sell silicone tape that is UL Listed and make similar product claims to those found on our Silicone Rescue Tape packaging label.
Our silicone tape also has additional unique properties and characteristics that go beyond the scope of a product that normally fits into the limiting definition of UL Standard 510, and therefore UL feels that we should not have these claims on our package. Examples include our impressive 950 PSI tensile strength, 500F (260C) heat resistance, and resistance to oils, fuels, acids and solvents. UL feels that consumers might incorrectly assume that UL has specifically listed our product for ALL of these other characteristics that go beyond the scope of UL Standard 510 insulation tape. The complete technical characteristics of our silicone tape can be found at: http://www.rescuetape.com/silicone-tape-technical-data.
Our loyal retailers and customers can be assured that our product is NOT defective nor is it counterfeit or unsafe, and our silicone tape absolutely maintains the specifications listed on our packaging and website. We remain optimistic that UL will communicate with us responsibly and work with us as their paying customer to resolve their concerns, publicly acknowledge the safety of our silicone tape, and complete the UL Listing process as they have been hired to do.
We encourage our customers and retailers find answers to more questions regarding UL at http://www.rescuetape.com/ul.
