Silent Auction Of Paralympics Memorabilia To Support Rehabilitation Research
ROSEMONT, Ill., Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Remember the brightly colored jackets the Olympians wore in Sochi last winter? Would you like to get your hands on one? Or perhaps a gym bag with the Paralympics logo? A watch from the Beijing Olympics? These items and many more will be available during a silent auction to raise money for rehabilitation research.
The Foundation for PM&R is hosting a Tribute to the Paralympics: Silent Auction and a Walk Through Paralympic History on November 13-15. The event will be held in the San Diego Convention Center, in conjunction with the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Annual Assembly.
Since 1992, the Paralympics have been held in the same city shortly after the Olympic Games. Individuals with impairment participate in many of the events held during the Olympics, with modifications to accommodate their disability. Adaptive device and prosthetic technology have advanced to the point that some Paralympic athletes are able to compete in the regular Olympic Games, as Oscar Pistorius famously did in the 2012 Olympics in London.
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, or physiatry, is the medical specialty that focuses on restoring health, improving function, minimizing pain and enhancing quality of life for individuals with disability. PM&R doctors help individuals with disability participate in sports, at the grassroots level all the way up to the elite international competitive arena of the Paralympics. Funds raised by this silent auction will be used for research into the best techniques and interventions to help individuals with disability participate in the activities of daily living. Donations are also being solicited; 85% of the Foundation's support comes from individual contributions.
