Sideways Introduces Patent-Pending Buddy Reading Technology with Beatrix Potter's Classic The Tale of Peter Rabbit for the iPad, iPhone and Touch
With Apple's Game Center technology Buddy Reading enables shared, remote reading across Apple mobile devices
CLEVELAND, Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Sideways, a software company that transforms books, magazines and other publications into immersive experiences on mobile devices, today announced its patent-pending Buddy Reading technology with a version of Beatrix Potter's classic in Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition for the iPad, iPhone and Touch. Taking advantage of Apple's new Game Center technology, Buddy Edition allows two people to remotely read aloud together. Now a parent on a business trip can read a bedtime story in real-time to a child at home with both able to interact with the digital book and each other across different devices.
The Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition app also features Sideways' Anigraphic Engine, which allows authors to easily add directorial commands to their text, graphics and audio. The Anigraphic Engine enables the development of animated books with sound effects and voice over narration. With this technology, an animated book can now be envisioned, designed and built without custom software development.
In addition to Buddy Reading, Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition enhances the classic story in the following ways:
- Children can read the book on their own or choose the "Read To Me" option.
- A "Learn To Read" function allows children to touch objects and see and hear the words.
- Users can interact with the pictures; some initiate sounds when touched while others can be moved from the screen. For example, children can help the bunnies fill their baskets with berries.
- A coloring book featuring the line drawings from Beatrix Potter's first version of the book is included in the Sideways application enabling children to digitally color a favorite drawing and then share it electronically with friends and relatives.
"Nothing can take the place of a parent reading a bedtime story to a child. Now with the Buddy Reading technology, it's possible for traveling parents to keep that intimate, precious connection to their children at home, no matter the distance," said Charles Stack, CEO and co-founder of Sideways. "The new generation of multi-media devices offers great ways of telling classic stories. We've taken the century-old delight experienced when reading Peter Rabbit and respectfully extended it using new technology, which can be efficiently applied to books new and old."
Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition is now available in the iTunes App Store for $1.99. A demo of the Buddy Reading technology can be found on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykD5RFHjS1c.
